In 1917, the United States sent its first military contingent to France under General Pershing. Initially deployed without helmets, the army adopted the British Mark I model and soon produced its own version: the M1917. Made of stronger manganese steel, this helmet offered improved protection and structural integrity. It became the U.S. standard. Army helmet during World War I.
