The horse bow was originally developed in Asia. The most well-known archers were the Huns and the Mongols, who used this type of bow produced over centuries. Horse bows were, as the name suggests, designed and crafted to be used on horseback. After all, when riding, space is limited, and the mounted warrior needed to remain agile in order to survive or hunt successfully. This nearly perfect bow spread across the world throughout history, and other peoples also developed their own horse bows, which did not differ significantly in their basic function, although each had its own variations. Unlike typical Western European bows, such as the English longbow, horse bows are not made from a single piece but from multiple components. Wood was used, bonded and reinforced with horn, sinew, and bone to create a refined and robust bow, short enough for use on horseback while still ensuring long range and high arrow speed.
The DRAKE Attila is a modern horse bow that follows tradition and is constructed as a multi-piece bow. The outer layers of ash, black poplar, zebrano, or yew complement the maple core, making the bow smooth to draw and allowing a typical draw length of up to 32 inches. The limb tips are reinforced and significantly more durable. They consist of two separate wooden components glued to both sides of the limbs, giving the tips a solid appearance. The effect of the rigid tips is comparable to that of recurve bows, as the string rests at the lower end of the reinforcement, similar to recurve limbs. When drawing the bow, the pull initially feels increasingly difficult. However, once the string moves away from the tips, the leverage effect of the long reinforcements comes into play, making the draw smoother and more pleasant. This sophisticated mechanism results in faster arrows and allows the bow to be more forgiving of shooting errors.
The grip has an ergonomic shape and is very slim, making it particularly suitable for archers with smaller hands. In addition, it is leather-wrapped, which makes it especially comfortable. The transition between the limbs and tips is smooth and precise. The limbs and thicker tips are also wrapped with thread.
However, the aforementioned outer limbs made from special woods, which give the bow its distinctive character, provide the unique visual appearance of the DRAKE Attila.
